How does a gemsbok survive in the desert?
When water is scarce in its home range of east and southwest Africa, the gemsbok supplements its diet of grasses with succulent wild tsama melons and cucumbers. If necessary, it can dig some three feet deep to find roots and tubers. The species also is adept at conserving body fluids: A gemsbok can raise its body temperature up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid sweating.
